1066 is possibly the most significant date in English history, William of Normandy led one of the largest armies ever assembled across the Channel and defeated Harald Godwineson at the Battle of Hastings, just weeks after Harald had defeated a Norwegian army at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire.
In 1086, William commissioned a great survey of his new kingdom, which he had controlled with his servants, relatives and knights. Although scholars have debated its purpose for nearly a thousand years, it is most likely to be a record of tax liability and patronage for the king to record what he reigned over.
Allow one of William's knights, newly installed on Saxon lands, to guide pupils through the Battle of Hastings, the Harrowing of the North, the convocation of the Domesday Book and the greatest period of castle building in the country's history.
