Key Stage 2 Politics

Light Up Education: Politics- Parliament

In-depth politics workshops

Starting with a quick introduction, we move on to look at 3 parliamentary systems: Ancient Athens, Medieval English and Modern British.

Ready to roll or tailored to you

Our carefully-crafted Key Stage 2 Politics programme is designed to cover all 3 systems in an interactive and engaging way: by setting up the three democratic institutions and putting them into action in your classroom or school hall.

Fun and challenging days

Politics workshops that can combine drama and performance, group and independent learning, and creative thinking.

Adaptable

Days are fully flexible to take your school timetable into account. Workshops can be whole day for smaller groups and tailored to encompass larger groups, covering a single political system.

Light Up Politics- Elections

Your school is going to the polls!

Elections can be done just within the class or year group, or they can be done across the whole school as an event or to elect school council members, for example.

o Introduction – Welcome to the elections! How the process will work and what we will be doing

o Parties – What are political parties? How do they work and what do they do? Students research existing political parties and can they either ‘adopt’ one or create their own

o Leadership – Who makes a good political leader? Which ones are successful and which are the failures? Who will lead the new parties?

o Manifestos – With parties in place, students create their manifesto. This is the election platform, looking at the pros and cons of different policies and aims

o Voting system – Proportional Representation, First Past The Post, Single Transferrable Vote or Acclamation? Secret or public ballot?

o Vote – Cross in the box time!

Parliament and Elections workshops can also be combined: conducting the election and then having a 'State Opening of Parliament', the first debate and the first vote. A great way to experience an important part of British politics.

Founder Peter Sawyer studied politics at A-level and university and has continued to study modern and historical politics, especially the British Parliament and Ancient Athens.

Light Up Education Politics workshops aims to help explain, intrigue and engage pupils in politics, the political system, why it's important and how it works.
